PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment), an initiative of OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), aims at establishing how well an education system has equipped students with the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the challenges of the future. Three domains of achievements are assessed, namely, reading literacy, mathematical literacy and scientific literacy. Over 50 countries / regions have participated in the assessment. Hong Kong participated the first time in 2003 and Shanghai participated the first time in 2009.
In the presentation, the PISA assessment framework for reading literacy will first be described, followed by a delineation of how reading literacy is measured. Implications of the assessment framework for second language reading curriculum will be discussed.
